About Me
By Lawrence McKaySo….who is Lawrence McKay???
I am a regular, every day guy. I’m a husband, father, brother….I’m just like any other guy on the street except for two things……my passion for fitness and helping others and the fact that I was born with a Club Foot. Since I was a youngster, I was always fascinated by the “strong and powerful”. My favorite cartoon characters were “The Incredible Hulk” and “He-Man”. The way the Hulk used to flex and rip his clothes with his muscles just amazed me. I wanted to be that strong when I grew up so naturally I flocked to fitness as a hobby as I got older.
Despite being born disabled and having corrective surgery at birth I was always very active. Coming up as a youth, I played sports, which introduced me to the weightroom. I developed a love for weightlifting and staying in shape because, 1) it got me all the girls and 2) it just made me feel good. My love affair went on into adulthood but it wasn’t until around 2003 that I really got the bug to train others. I was in peak condition, working out with my best friend at that time (who was a Marine) and the rest of the gymrats I’d met. For me, being in the gym was my therapy. We got to trade little insider secrets and push our bodies to the limit and got all the attention. My philosophy was steak ‘n potatoes along with heavy lifting would fix all my fitness issues….throw in a few cases of Coronas and BAM!!! What could’ve been better right?? LOL Boy was I wrong. That’s back when I thought I knew it all about being healthy.
Needless to say, bad habits yield bad results and I fell into a downward spiral that lasted a few yeeears. I ballooned up from 175lbs to 213lbs and climbing. It wasn’t until 2009 (when I hit 238lbs) that my ultimate reality check hit me like a ton of bricks. I was 31 and I vividly remember my teenage daughter walking up to me, patting me on my belly and saying “Hey, what’s up fayboy?” (POW! BAM!! BOOM!!!..Woooooow, did she really just say that? There goes my ego and self-esteem.) That very moment forced me to take a hard look at myself and make some drastic changes to whip myself back into shape. THAT was the moment my career as a Personal Trainer and Online Fitness Coach was born. THAT also was the birth of Ante-Up Fitness.
